BIRTH: July 14, 2006
DEATH: May 31, 2007
Iyonna, 10 months, was tortured and murdered in a cheap, cramped, dirty, motel room, by her mother’s boyfriend while her mother, Heather Brown, went to a job-training program to be a home health-care worker. Heather Brown was also pregnant with a child at the time by the same man that tortured and murdered her 10 month old daughter. Heather had a 4 year-old daughter at the motel where Iyonna was tortured and killed and witnessed the event. The 4 year-old was unharmed.
When Heather Brown returned back to the motel room at 6:20 p.m. she found her daughter with severe injuries. Heather Brown, did nothing. She didn’t call for help for her daughter until she wasn’t breathing, or only breathing on a limited basis. The 9-1-1 call took place at 11:50 p.m., five hours after she arrived back at the motel and could clearly see Iyonna needed medical attention. When the ambulance arrived, Heather walked out holding the lifeless baby. Iyonna was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The boyfriend said while he was cooking some sausages in water and oil, in an electric skillet, Iyonna rolled off the bed. As Iyonna rolled off the bed she got entangled in the wires of the skillet and it flipped over on her. He said he rushed over and kicked the skillet to get it off the baby. Even, if that’s what happened, why wasn’t paramedics called then?
At the autopsy, it was found that Iyonna Brown, 10 months old, had three skull fractures that would have required three separate blows to the head. That wasn’t consistent with a fall off the bed. With the fractured skull in three places, Iyonna suffered second-degree burns on her feet, legs, genitals, and buttocks and had multiple bruises all over her body. The official cause of Iyonna’s death, were brain hemorrhages caused by “blunt-force trauma.”
Iyonna’s mother, Heather Brown, was charged with second-degree manslaughter while her boyfriend was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter.
The boyfriend was convicted of second-degree murder, menacing, and welfare fraud, he was sentenced to 26 years to life.
Heather Brown, Iyonna’s mother, plead guilty to manslaughter and welfare fraud and she was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison.
