BIRTH: September 14, 2009
DEATH: February 2, 2010
Brandon, 4 1/2 months, died because his mother, father, and grandfather neglected him to death. When police arrived at the house to the call of a baby not breathing what they found shocked them. The home where the child lived was “dirty” and “uninhabitable,” with the temperature inside approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Trash and dirty diapers were piled in corners and covered the floor.
Preliminary autopsy results revealed no traces of food in Brandon’s system and indicated that the baby’s diaper hadn’t been changed in at least two days.
A full two hours may have passed between Amanda, Brandon’s mother, finding him not breathing and his father’s call 10:31 a.m. 911 call. The mother reportedly told deputies that after finding their son in that condition she phoned his father, Kristopher Burchett, who was staying at his uncle’s residence and came to the home before calling paramedics.
Another individual living in the house, told investigators he entered a bedroom at about 8:30 a.m. and saw Amanda sitting on the bed next to Brandon, who was lying on his back. He said he checked the baby’s neck for a pulse and that Brandon “felt ice cold.”
Three people were charged in the death of 4 1/2 month old Brandon. His mother, Amanda Goodman, his father Kristopher Burchett, and Brandon’s grandfather, Kenneth Burchett. Kenneth owned the house in which Brandon’s died and also lived inside of it. He could clearly see the children, including Brandon were being neglected and did nothing to help the children. The county was seeking to demolish the house because it was unlivable.
There were 4 or more adults living in a house full of garbage, dirty diapers all over the floor, kids not being fed, bathed, or even taken care of, and no one did anything. Two other children, ages 1 and 2, were removed from the home and placed in the care of other family members.
The child’s father, Kristopher Burchett, pleaded no contest to felony charge of child neglect that resulted in death and was sentenced to three to 15 years in prison. When he gets out he has to register on the state’s child abuse and neglect registry and remain registered for 10 years. During that period, he would not be permitted to care for any children, including his own.
