Josh, 17, and Mason, 16, were shot and killed in the doorway of Joshua’s home. Josh’s mother, Diane Compton, witnessed the shooting of her son and his best friend. Mason was spending the night in the home. It was supposed to be a “guys night,” filled with pizza and video games as they were on Spring break.

Josh had just gotten home from appendectomy surgery the day before and his friends had been pouring in that night visiting. Mason and Josh were upstairs in Josh’s room playing video games. Diane, Josh’s mother, opened the door and told Mason he had company. Mason went downstairs and not long afterward, Josh made his way downstairs to join Mason a little after midnight.

He and Mason stood at the foot of the staircase talking to the men, who held the screen door open. By then, Diane had gone back into the living room and partially shut the door that leads into that room. All she heard were voices. She couldn’t make out the conversation no one ever raised his voice. She finally told Josh it was getting cold and it was time for bed.

Then, an explosion of bullets.

Josh tried to run into the living room and shut the door behind him, but the killer followed. Josh collapsed behind the door, and the killer shot him a final time in the head.

Josh was shot four times in the chest, stomach, back and in the back of the head. His mother tried desperately to save his life by giving him mouth to mouth before paramedics arrived.

Only feet away from Josh, in the entryway of the Comptons’ house, his best friend, Mason lay dead.

Before the killer left, he stared at Josh’s mother.

She described him as a stocky black man with squinted eyes, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a wide face wearing a white cap or bandana and what looked like a dark-blue feather down coat.

Josh and Mason’s murder remains unsolved.

Anyone with information they believe could help police solve this case is asked to call Crime Line 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

KATLYN COLLMAN

BIRTH: August 13, 1994

DEATH: January 25, 2005

Katlyn Collman ~ Age 10

Katie, 10, was a fourth grader who loved animals and the Disney Channel. She came home the day she went missing excited about a pajama party planned at school the next day.

Katie headed to the Dollar General store a few blocks away to pick up some toilet paper. She apparently swung by the People’s Bank to grab a lollipop, and stopped at the Penn Villa apartments to tell a resident that a dog had been hit by a train on the adjacent track.

She was never seen alive again.

After her disappearance, an AMBER Alert was issued

5 days later a state trooper found her body in a creek with her hands tied behind her back. She had been sexually assaulted and drowned.

Charles Hickman, 20, and Anthony Stockelman were arrested for the rape and murder of Katie. Charles Hickman confessed to killing Katie, but after investigators spent nine weeks checking his story, he was released from custody and the murder charge against him was dropped. To many people placed him some place else and DNA connected Anthony Stockelman to the crime.

Anthony Stockelman was charged with the rape and murder of Katie, and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

CYNTHIA DIONNE WESLEY

BIRTH: April 30, 1949

DEATH: September 15, 1963

Cynthia Dionne Wesley ~ Age 14

Cynthia, 14, was murdered inside a church during the Civil Rights Movement in a bombing. Along with Carole, Addie Mae Collins, 14, Denise McNair, 11, and Carole Robertson, 14, were also killed.

On the morning of the bombing, a man was seen getting out of a white and turquoise Chevrolet car and placing a box under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. Afterwards, at 10:22 a.m., the bomb exploded killing the four girls. The girls had been attending Sunday school classes at the church. Twenty-two other people were also hurt by the blast.

A witness identified Robert Chambliss, a member of the Ku Klux Klan, as the man who placed the bomb under the steps of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. He was arrested and charged with murder and possessing a box of 122 sticks of dynamite without a permit. On October 8, 1963, Chambliss was found not guilty of murder and received a hundred-dollar fine and a six-month jail sentence for having the dynamite.

The case was unsolved until Bill Baxley was elected attorney general of Alabama. He requested the original Federal Bureau of Investigation files on the case and discovered that the organization had accumulated a great deal of evidence against Chambliss that had not been used in the original trial. In November, 1977 Chambliss was tried once again for the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing. Now aged 73, Chambliss was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. Chambliss died in an Alabama prison on 29 October 1985.

On 18 May 2000, the FBI announced that the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing had been carried out by the Ku Klux Klan splinter group, the Cahaba Boys. It was claimed that four men, Robert Chambliss, Herman Cash, Thomas Blanton and Bobby Cherry had been responsible for the crime. Cash was dead but Blanton and Cherry were arrested and Blanton has since been tried and convicted.

The song “Birmingham Sunday,” recorded by Joan Baez memorialized the victims of the bombing. In 1997 a documentary film on the bombing called “4 Little Girls” was released. A youth center dedicated to her was established in Birmingham.

LESLIE R. COLLIER

BIRTH: June 29, 1992

DEATH: July 17, 2008

Leslie R. Collier ~ Age 16

Leslie, 16, was beat and stabbed to death in his home along with his brother, Dustin Hintz, 22, and family friend Justin Berrios, 20. Justin was the father of Leslie and Dustin’s nephew.

There has never been a clear motive to the murders other than the murderer was upset because he felt his girlfriend had cheated on him. They had broken up but he was allowed to continue to live in the home with the family. His ex-girlfriend, Samantha Hintz, 19, was the sister of Leslie and Dustin. She was the mother of Justin’s child.

Four other people were found bound, but uninjured. They were: Berrios’ 2-year-old son, Tristan Hintz-Berrios; Samantha Hintz, 19, the child’s mother; Matthew Collier, 21; and Cynthia Collier, 43, who is the mother of Dustin, Samantha Hintz, Leslie, and Matthew Collier.

Using carpentry hammers and knives, Randal Rushing beat and stabbed the three victims to death while the other family members were tied up and subjected to hearing the murders take place.

After the murders Randal Rushing took video game consoles, video games, jewelry and several debit cards. He was arrested in Wilkes-Barre hours after the murders.

Randal Rushing was charged with 3 counts of first degree murder. He tried to use the insanity defense but it didn’t work. He was found guilty of all three murders and sentenced to 3 life sentences. He was also found guilty of numerous other crimes and sentenced to an additional 43 years and nine months to 87 years and six months on top of that for related crimes.

He was found guilty on all counts – guilty of first-, second- and third-degree murder, guilty of kidnapping for holding his ex-girlfriend, Samantha Hintz, a physically disabled Matthew Collier and Cynthia Collier, the mother of the Collier boys, in the home against their will and guilty of robbing all three. He was found guilty of indecent assault for fondling Samantha Hintz with a mocking regret at what he had lost when they split.

After the shooting the ex-friend left the school and called 911 from a nearby restaurant and told authorities she had shot Amanda. When police arrived at the school it wasn’t known what killed Amanda as she didn’t show any signs of being shot. It wasn’t until her autopsy that it was brought out that she had been shot once in the chest.

JAMAREE CLARENCE COLEMAN

BIRTH: May 25, 1993

DEATH: July 24, 1993

Jamaree Clarence Coleman ~ Age 2 months

Jamaree, 2 months, and his mother, Cheryl Lewrisey Coleman, were visiting Cheryl’s brother and left in the early morning hours. Her brother offered to give her a ride but she declined saying she would walk. Jamaree and his mother were last seen at a gas station and they apparently got into a truck driven by a drifter, Carl Harris.

Cheryl’s body was discovered at approximately six hours after she was last seen, in Academy Creek, several blocks from her brother’s home. The creek is infested with snakes and alligators. Authorities determined Cheryl died as the result of a homicide. Her body was nude and had been mutilated. There was no sign of Jamaree at the scene, but his baby carrier and blanket were left behind.

Carl Harris stated he killed Cheryl in a wooded area and then left Jamaree at the edge of Academy Creek after he put Cheryl’s body in the water. It is believed Jamaree was swept away by high tides.

Carl Harris was charged with both Cheryl and Jamaree’s homicides and pleaded guilty to the crimes. He was sentenced to two terms of life in prison without parole, plus twenty years for assault.

Jamaree is still listed as missing; as his body has never been found.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Garett, 11, and Gavin, 9, with their mother Sheri, were strangled to death in their home by Christopher Coleman, their father.
Garett and Gavin’s father, after strangling his sons and wife in their beds, spray painted threatening messages on the wall with red paint to make it look like someone else committed the crimes. He was able to do this, as his children lay dead and still tucked into their beds as if they were sleeping.
He left the house the day of the murders to set up and alibi by going to the gym but it was later found that Garett, Gavin and their mother had been killed hours before he left the house.
Before the murders it has been shown that he set up an email account to send threatening emails to himself to throw investigators off his trail.
An investigation showed that Christopher murdered his family so he could start a new life with this mistress.
Christopher Coleman was charged with 3 counts of first-degree murder of his family. He was convicted and sentenced to life without parole.
MOLLY ALLYSUN “BROOKE” COHRAN
BIRTH: February 5, 1991
DEATH: June 3, 2007
Molly Allysun Brooke Cohran ~ Age 16
Molly “Brooke”, 16, was shot in the chest and killed while attending a graduation party.
A fight erupted at the party where two people were killed and eight others were wounded in what turned out to be gang related. There were over 100 children at the party with adults present, too. That didn’t stop the fight that eventually took two innocent lives.
There has never really been a clear motive to the killings other than rival gang members marking their territory.
As I read through a memorial for Molly, I found that this was the first party she was ever allowed to attend alone. Her first time being out without her mother with her. The shooter said, “I’m going to go in there and shoot the place up”. No what he did was shoot and kill two innocent people for no reason at all.
Labaron Devon Curry was charged with murder, convicted and sentencted to life for the murder of precious Molly. He can apply for parole in 30 years.
Dewayne Ivory was charged with making false statement to police and charged as a party to the crime of murder. He handed the gun to Labaron right before shot rang out.
DONALD COFFEY, JR
BIRTH: September 18, 2001
DEATH: May 9, 2009
Donald Coffey Jr. ~ Age 7
Donald, 7, was shot in the face and head and died two days later by two people as his family stopped on a public road to allow the children to use the restroom. They were returning from a family outing.
The road in which they stopped was close to a couples home with a sign in their yard that read, “Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be re-shot, Smile I will”. The investigation reveled that the family wasn’t anywhere close to their property. The area included a dirt road, trees and overgrown brush and that it wasn’t uncommon for people to go off-roading there.
Sheila Muhs fired a 12-gauge shotgun once, then handed it to her husband, Gale Muhs, who also fired once.
Sheila then called 911 and told the dispatcher: “They’re running over our levee in big-wheel vehicles, and I shot them.”
The levee belonged to the subdivision and was not private property.
There was no indication the unarmed victims did anything threatening toward the Muhs.
Donald Coffey Sr., Donald’s father, suffered a pellet wound in his right shoulder and his sister, Destiny, suffered a wound to the elbow. A family friend, Patrick Cammack, was in serious condition with a head wound. He is now out of the hospital with a shot gun pellet that can’t be removed from behind his ear.
Sheila Muhs was charged with felony murder and attempted murder and convicted in April, 2011. Sentencing is still pending.
Gale Muhs was charged with felony murder and attempted murder and his trial is still pending.
DEATH: July 8, 1982
Wendy Lee Coffield ~ Age 16
Wendy, 16, was a victim of The Green River Killer.
Two boys riding their bicycles across a bridge spotted the tennis shoes first of fully clothed body. They stopped on the bridge over the Green River to rest. “The thing that caught my eye was tennis shoes. That doesn’t go away.” They waded into the water, thinking it was a mannequin, then they saw hair floating under water.
The body was that of Wendy Lee Coffield, a dropout and runaway. She had been killed by ligature strangulation.
Women, many of them just girls, really, started disappearing in 1982. Some of them had histories of prostitution, and many were last seen along Pacific Highway South near Sea-Tac airport. By 1984, the number of dead or missing women reached 49, becoming the nation’s largest unsolved serial-murder case. In 2003 the case was finally solved with the arrest of Gary Ridgway.
AMANDA “MANDIE” COCO
BIRTH: March 6, 1995
DEATH: May 30, 2007
Amanda "Mandie" Coco ~ Age 12
Mandie, 12, was murdered by her father, Christopher Coco, a few weeks after she reported that her father was molesting her. After murdering Mandie, he shot and killed him self in what police labeled a murder-suicide.
People said they always thought Mandie’s father, Christopher, was an odd man who screamed at children and sported a pistol strapped to his hip. He would threaten them and tell them he killed his wife and buried in the back of the house. People said Mandie would walk around with bruises on her arms and legs. The week before her father killed her, she sported a cast on her arm. Her friends, and others said she always made excuses as to how they happened. She told friends that her father molested her and mostly did it on holidays.
Police went to the apartment to check on Mandie at the request of KidsPeace, where she was enrolled, because she had not been seen at school in a while. Police got no response when they knocked on the door  and when an officer returned about six hours later and noticed flies clumped on inside windows, the officer became suspicious. He had the building manager let him inside the apartment where he located Mandie.
Mandie and her father’s bodies were found upstairs next to each other, on a bed, and a 9mm semiautomatic handgun was found under Christopher Coco. Police were not certain how long they had been dead, but they believed it was more than 24 hours.
There were no signs someone had broken into their apartment. The windows were locked and both doors were deadbolted from the inside. One door had a snow shovel wedged under the doorknob and another door had a crutch jammed under the knob. Mandie and her father lived in the apartment alone.
Jade, 17, Joi, 11, and their mother Stacy, were stabbed to death by the boyfriend of Jade.
Denzel Pittman and Jade had an ongoing dating relationship. They got into an argument as they were on the stairs leading up to the third floor apartment Jade shared with her mother, Stacy, and sister, Joi.
The argument became physical and Denzel started beating and strangling Jade. He then stabbed her at least 11 times in her neck, shoulder and chest.
As she cried out for help, her mother, Stacy, came to the door of the apartment. Denzel then turned his weapon on Stacy, stabbing her about 15 times in her head, chest, arms and hands.
Joi was screaming during the attack on her mother and Denzel entered the apartment and stabbed Joi in her chest and head to stop her screaming.
Witnesses identified Pittman as the person seen walking past his girlfriend lying on the apartment landing. His clothes and hands were covered in blood. They were able to give a detailed description of Denzel. That description was broadcast over the police radio, and officers from the Targeted Response Unit found Pittman walking down the street. Pittman immediately ran from the officers after spotting them, but the officers chased him and caught him before he could get away.
